Rockhurst Online MSN Suite Addresses A Growing Need In the Field Of Nursing

Wednesday, Sep 13, 2023

The United States is facing a nursing shortage, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that more than 275,000 additional nurses will be needed from 2020 through 2030. The BLS is also expecting job growth for Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners to be much higher than the national average for all other occupations (45% growth).

Patients demand high-quality, holistic, patient-first health care services, and nurse practitioners are integral to better health care outcomes. As the Baby Boomers age, the United States is seeing the highest population of elderly Americans (over the age of 65) than at any other time in history. In 2029, the youngest members of the Baby Boomer generation will retire, and the United States will see approximately a 73% increase in Americans aged 65 years and older (source: BLS.gov).

Adults aged 65 and older require a different level of health care and support, including managing chronic health concerns like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, or dementia. Adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioners (AGPCNP) are essential to fill the growing demand and deliver advanced health care for older adults. However, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) reports that with more than 355,000 licensed nurse practitioners (NPs) in the country, only 7% work in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care, and only 2.9% work in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care.

Higher salaries also match the high demand for nursing practitioners with master’s degrees. In May 2021, the median wage for registered nurses (RNs) in the United States was $77,600 per year compared to $123,780 per year for nursing careers that require a master’s degree (source: BLS.gov).

Rockhurst University will begin enrolling students in certificate programs for diversity, equity and inclusion at both the graduate and undergraduate level in fall 2023, offering students a curriculum that will prepare them to lead confidently and compassionately in a multicultural world.

Education Faculty's Book Highlights Advantages of Globally Engaged Teachers

Monday, Mar 27, 2023

When Nilufer Guler, Ph.D., associate professor of education, started asking for proposals for her latest project, she wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of responses.

But the theme of her new book, titled “At School in the World: Developing Globally Engaged Teachers,” must have been pretty inspiring. Guler and her co-editor, Carine Ullom, Ed.D., received 58 chapter proposals around incorporating global citizenship and intercultural competency into the classroom.

“You always hope to get a good response for a project like this,” she said. “But we weren’t expecting this many great works.”

As impressive as the number of proposals was their quality and their variety, she said. Reflecting the theme of the book, Guler said its authors from across the world share a broad array of research from different perspectives and using different methodologies.

“We were shocked and pleasantly surprised at the scope of this work,” she said.

Rockhurst University Introduces Two-Year Online Ed.D. Programs with Three In-Demand Concentrations

Monday, Feb 13, 2023

Rockhurst University is transforming learning for education leaders by introducing a two-year Online Ed.D. in Education and Leadership program with three in-demand concentrations. This 100% online, part-time program allows aspiring education leaders to continue working while earning a doctorate degree in education. In the new online program, students will complete a doctoral capstone research project and compile learnings into a publishable article and presentation.

This virtual presentation to education leaders gives doctoral candidates the opportunity to showcase their work and thought leadership, as well as bridge the gap between theory and practice. Unlike a traditional thesis in which the doctoral candidate must argue a hypothesis, the capstone project allows candidates to directly address a current issue in their field and offer data-informed solutions that can shape the future of education.

The higher education sector, K-12 schools, and health care institutions all rely on competent leadership to improve outcomes. For instance, K-12 leadership development can help retain principals and teachers, improve academic performance, build a culture of trust in school communities, and encourage student success both in and out of the classroom. In addition, reports show that a shortage of health care educators, specifically a lack of qualified nursing program faculty, has exasperated the national nursing shortage.

Newly Renovated Sedgwick Hall Elevates On-Campus Experiences for Online Rockhurst nursing students

Wednesday, Aug 31, 2022

Recently Rockhurst University held a ceremony for the latest evolution of Sedgwick Hall as the new home for the Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The hall has had a long history as the University’s first building, serving in various capacities such as residence, classroom and recreational spaces, since 1914. Now, after recent renovations, thanks to the University’s “For The Greater” campaign, Sedgwick Hall will foster learning for the next generation of healthcare workers.

During the renovation planning, the University was inspired by one of the six Jesuit core values, Cura Personalis, which means to ‘Care for the whole person’, a value Rockhurst takes seriously. The idea of caring for the whole person and showing care for the history of the students' experience was instrumental in the plan to reuse materials and preserve 90% of the original structure, which in a very concrete way, helped to blend the past and future. The University is paying homage to the thousands of students, faculty and staff who walked Sedgwick Hall for over a century. University President the Rev. Thomas B. Curran, S.J., stated in the Fall of 2021 that taking a moment to reflect on the natural resources expended for such a project echoes the Jesuit call to care for our common home.
